American Idol alum David Archuleta admitted that people have recognized him on dating apps, which might be affecting his love life. He competed in American Idol season 7 against singers like David Hernandez, Jason Castro, Brooke White, Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Michael Johns, but it was another David–David Cook–who took home the title of American Idol winner. Both Davids have found success in the entertainment industry, with Archuleta releasing eight albums and competing on The Masked Singer. In 2022, Archuleta came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

While Archuleta has faced struggles, especially from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he had to leave for his own mental well-being, he’s attempting to date after coming out. During an interview with Us Weekly, he revealed that he’s been using dating apps, but one particular aspect has upended his love life. “I didn’t think I was that well-known, but everyone knows me,” Archuleta said. “They post my profile on TikTok and things.” He jokingly added, “I guess I was a bigger deal than I realize.”

Archuleta might be having issues using dating apps because he’s being recognized, but he’s glad he doesn’t have to “hide” who he is anymore. Everyone in the LGBTQ+ community deserves to feel pride in being queer, he said. Even if someone out there is from a family or community that’s not very accepting, Archuleta is “here to support you. We’re here to help you feel seen,” despite how “scary” it can be. He’s going to continue doing everything he can to create a “safe future and a celebratory future” for the LGBTQ+ community.

It’s unclear if Archuleta plans to publicly open up about future partners, but either way, he deserves privacy for anything he chooses not to share. For now, though, the American Idol alum is happy to help the LGBTQ+ community in any way he can. During his interview with Us Weekly, he revealed that he’s had people come up to him and share their stories about how they relate to him or to thank him for the work he’s doing. One person told him, “Hey, I’m not out yet. But seeing you–thank you.”
