The highly anticipated secret project of My Hero Academia has been unveiled on Aug 5, 2024. Much to the fandom’s surprise, the project was revealed to be the franchise’s first-ever worldwide character popularity poll.
Titled WORLD BEST HERO, the announcement was made by Shueisha, who launched the poll to celebrate the conclusion of the manga.
The poll will be conducted in two stages. The initial ‘MAIN STAGE’ will run from Aug 5, 2024, to Sep 30, 2024, where fans worldwide can vote for their favorite characters from the series.
The results of this first round will be revealed on Dec 2, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. JST through a premium live broadcast on the official Jump YouTube channel.
The top three characters will then advance to ‘PLUS ULTRA STAGE’. This final round will be conducted for just 24 hours, during which fans can vote for their ultimate favorite character.
The results of this stage will be announced on Dec 3, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. JST.
Throughout the voting period, weekly top 20 rankings will be released, showcasing the popularity of characters segmented across eight regions: Asia, Oceania, North America, Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Japan. Rankings will be updated every Monday at 12:00 a.m. JST.
To further engage the fan community, Shueisha has announced several additional events and promotions:
- FAN ART CONTEST: Fans can submit their illustrations on X with the hashtags “#WBH_FANART” or “#頑張れって感じのファンアート” (DoYourBestFanArt) from Aug 5 to Sep 1. Ten selected works will be showcased on the special website, and winners will receive a personalized digital signature from Horikoshi.
- MY BEST HERO GENERATOR: Fans can create and share images of their ‘BEST 5’ heroes.
- Super Poll Event: Conducted in four parts to gather fans’ favorite hero names, quirks, episodes, and comic covers. The results, along with Horikoshi’s answers to collected questions, will be published in the final fanbook, available only in Japan.
In addition to this, it was also revealed that Kohei Horikoshi has penned a heartfelt message to his readers, which will be featured in the US edition of The New York Times on Aug 5, and international edition (including Japan) on Aug 6.

Kohei Horikoshi started serializing the manga in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump in July 2014. Its chapters have been collected in 41 tankobon volumes as of August 2024.
The series has numerous spin-off manga, including My Hero Academia: Smash!!, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions.
