The Alien franchise is back, and there are options for where to watch Alien: Romulus in theaters or on streaming. From the time that Ridley Scott created the now iconic sci-fi/horror franchise, the characters and xenomorphs have had a place in theaters. That is how every Alien movie has been released, but with streaming becoming more prominent and the franchise faltering previously, the plans for Alien: Romulus‘ release evolved over time. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the seventh entry in the main franchise brings a new cast of characters into contact with the series’ terrifying and deadly creatures.

Back when Alien: Romulus was first announced in 2022, Disney and 20th Century planned for the movie, which takes place between the first two films in the Alien movie timeline, to release exclusively on streaming. The idea was to copy Prey and usher in a new era for Alien on the small screen by putting it directly on Hulu. The studios changed course to give Alien: Romulus a theatrical release the following year. While the movie was made with a theatrical release in mind, at home viewings are still an option when it comes to watching Alien: Romulus over time.

Disney and 20th Century’s release plan change gave Alien: Romulus a theatrical release date of August 16, 2024. The R-rated sci-fi/horror movie’s release marks the arrival of one of the year’s most anticipated movies. Audiences have the option to see Alien: Romulus in premium formats like IMAX or 4DX, depending on which theater or showtime they attend. These options would not be possible if the film’s original streaming-only release plan stuck.

When Will Alien: Romulus Release On Streaming?

Alien: Romulus Will Stream On Hulu

Disney and 20th Century have yet to officially announce when Alien: Romulus will be released on streaming. However, it is known that the movie will be on Hulu when that time comes. The good news is that Disney and 20th Century have one of the most predictable schedules when it comes to moving films to streaming. The studios wait around 85 days on average together, with 20th Century’s average coming in lower at around 75 days. This should mean that Alien: Romulus will likely release on Hulu in November 2024.

No Date Has Been Confirmed

Anyone wanting to watch Alien: Romulus at home without having a pre-existing or new streaming service subscription can still do so through its digital release. While no date has been announced yet, Disney and 20th Century typically make their movies available on PVOD services after 60 days. This would create a projection that Alien: Romulus could release on digital in October 2024. This would give the movie two months to play exclusively in theaters before the studios give audiences a chance to watch Alien: Romulus somewhere else.
