Brave Entertainment’s in-house groups continue to baffle me. Brave Brothers is one of the best producers in the business, capable of churning out epic dancefloor fillers and supercharged pop classics. Yet, he rarely gives his strongest material to his own groups and promotion continues to be a struggle.
I doubt many people even realize rookie group Candy Shop are having a comeback. It was only announced days ago with little fanfare, and now Don’t Cry has emerged like a stealth rocket. I had (and still have) high hopes for this group because when Brave Brothers brings his “A” game to female idol tracks he’s practically unstoppable. However, their languid debut left me underwhelmed and Don’t Cry more or less continues that pattern.
With summer upon us, it’s the perfect time for Candy Shop to throw down the gauntlet and stake their claim as queens of the season. Instead, Don’t Cry delivers a laidback, vibey approach to K-pop. We’ve heard so many “vibes” these past few years and very few of them cut through the noise to become memorable standouts. Don’t Cry has a stronger pulse than the group’s debut, but is undercut by languid melodies and a frustrating hesitance to raise its voice and grab attention. I suppose this is the song you’d play at a nighttime beach barbecue as mood music, but even then its hushed approach would likely lose to any and all distractions. A pleasant outro brings a bit of oomph to the arrangement, but at this point it’s too little, too late.
